Prom season is creeping up quickly, and we thought we’d throw together a blog post with all our favourite prom makeup tips, tricks, and inspiration.

First thing’s first, when picking out your makeup look, use your prom dress as inspiration! Once you’ve found the perfect dress, it’ll help you decide the overall vibe of your look. The cut of your dress will allow you to see what hairstyle works best, up or down, and use the colour of your dress to choose a makeup look. For instance, if your dress is a beautiful bold colour with embellishments, opt for a more subdued, neutral makeup look. If you’re wearing a neutral shade like black, you can go for a smokey eye or add a pop of colour on the lips like a beautiful red lip! Once you’ve got all that figured out, start creating a mood board for inspiration. Pinterest is great for inspo photos!

Next, nothing too groundbreaking here but show your skin some love before the big day! As you all know already, skincare will just make your makeup look and feel so much better. Give yourself a little facial a few days in advance to ensure you’re looking fresh, and hydrated. Exfoliate away all that dead skin—we absolutely love this light Wishful Face and Body Enzyme Scrub, which will get rid of any dead skin that your makeup could potentially cling onto and create texture, which we definitely do not want! Restore hydration with a great serum and moisturizer such as our Poetry in Potion Serum and Daydream Rosewater Cream. Use these two daily and you’ll notice such a difference in your skin—it will truly glow and be perfectly prom ready!

Next, let’s talk about makeup longevity. First, assess your skin type. If you tend to get oily in your T-zone, be sure to use a mattifying or oil-control primer, like this Smashbox Oil Control Mattifying Primer. Apply it in the areas you tend to get most oily and go in with a hydrating primer for the rest of your face. If you have normal skin, opt for a hydrating primer such as this Too Faced Hangover Rx Primer which contains coconut water and keeps the skin looking super fresh.

Don’t forget to also set your makeup to ensure maximum longevity. After using liquid and cream products, always ensure you’re setting with powder products. Going over top of your cream contour with bronzer is a great way to set that, likewise for blush and highlighter. And don’t forget to set the under eyes and the rest of the face with a translucent powder in order to avoid any flashback in photography! We absolutely love our Flawless Setting Powder for this. It will set the makeup and give you the most airbrushed finish. Another tried and true is the Laura Mercier Translucent Setting Powder. Setting the face will lock everything in place, and if you do sweat, it will sit on top of the powder, and you can easily dab it off with a tissue!
